Swim Lesson Program
We want every child, regardless of age or physical ability to learn to be comfortable in the water. We know first-hand what may work for one child, may not work for another. Some children may have a love for the water, were others have no experience or may even have a fear. We acknowledge that each child is unique and modify our program and techniques to fit the needs of the individual child. Whether your swimmer is learning the basics of water safety or refining their stroke for competitive swimming, we align our staff of instructors with your swimmers needs, ability, and personality. At All-Star we work with each child and their parents to set specific goals to ensure they come away from their swim lessons with a feeling of accomplishment and a love of swimming!
We have designed our program through four key stages of swim development: water safety; learning to swim; stroke development, and technical stroke refinement. Included below are the key elements that will be taught at each stage. However, each of these stages can be tailored to your child’s needs. We will discuss your swimmers current ability, desired outcome for lessons, and depending on their stage of swim ability will do an individual assessment in the pool. Taking what we learned from our initial conversation and our in-pool assessment, we will design a program around the appropriate stage to ensure your child has a positive swim experience.
Water safety
Child safety is our number one priority. It’s critical that your child knows what to do when they are in the water with or without an adult or in the event there is a water safety issue. Every child will learn beginning water skills, water safety, and basic water problem solving skills, including:
- Floating on their back
- Breath control
- Assisted horizontal swims
- Develop correct head and body orientation
- Beginning front crawl
- Sliding along wall
- Swimming to wall
- Learning to climb out of the pool
Learning to swim
Your child must understand and perform all of the skills identified in water safety before they can move onto this stage. The next step in the child’s swim development is learning to swim more independently, with close assistance from the instructor. By this time your child not only understands the basics of water safety, but can begin to problem solve and is starting to feel comfortable swimming unassisted. Key elements taught will include the following:
- Aquatic problem solving skills
- Jumping into pool and back to wall unassisted
- Swimming across length of the pool
- Efficient in entering and exiting the pool
Stroke development
Now that your child is fully water safe and can swim independently, it’s time to learn all four swim strokes. We teach the four strokes in this order: freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke – focusing on using proper kick and arm stroke.
- Freestyle
- Backstroke
- Butterfly
- Breaststroke
- Diving
Technical stroke refinement
This can be for any swimmers that want to master each stroke for exercise and enjoyment purposes or for youth that want to be competitive swimmers or join a swim team. A swimmer has to be able to swim all four strokes before they can move onto this stage. Swimmers will learn the necessary skills and techniques to refine their strokes. Key training will include the following:
- Starts & finishes
- Diving
- Streamline
- Breakout
- Breathing and stroke counting
- Flip turns
- Teaching good understanding of swim team and competitive swimming
